UK cycling in 2026

A bigger role for active travel.

The UK's Third Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy sets a long-term vision for walking, wheeling and cycling and includes a target for 55% of short stages in towns and cities to be walked or cycled by 2035.

What this means for riders

As cycling becomes part of a wider transport system, route quality, secure parking, public-transport connections, safe infrastructure and practical bike choices become increasingly important.

Start with your journey

A smart choice is rarely based on one specification. Consider distance, hills, luggage, storage, charging, weather, comfort and the places where you will actually ride.

Trust & practical guidance

Rules, batteries and technology.

Good cycling advice starts with reliable information. Our core guides explain the technical and practical decisions behind modern e-bikes.

UK e-bike law

In Great Britain, a compliant EAPC must have pedals capable of propelling it, a maximum 250W continuous rated motor and assistance that cannot propel the bike above 15.5 mph. The rider must be at least 14.

Battery safety

Use the correct charger, follow the manufacturer's instructions and take unusual heat, swelling, damage, smoke or other warning signs seriously. Safe charging and storage are part of smart cycling.

Smart Cycling UK FAQ

What is smart cycling?

Smart cycling is a practical approach to choosing a bicycle, technology, equipment and routes around real journeys, safety and everyday needs.

Are e-bikes good for commuting?

They can be, especially where distance, hills or effort make conventional cycling less practical. The right choice depends on the route, rider and journey.

What are the UK legal limits for an EAPC?

A compliant EAPC has pedals capable of propelling it, a maximum 250W continuous rated motor and assistance that cannot propel the bike above 15.5 mph. The rider must be at least 14.

How far can an e-bike travel on one charge?

There is no single range figure. Battery capacity, terrain, rider weight, assistance level, temperature, tyre pressure and riding style all affect real-world range.

How should an e-bike battery be charged?

Use the correct charger, follow the manufacturer's instructions and charge in a sensible location away from escape routes. Do not use a damaged or modified battery.
