The fundamentals

Hub motors sit in a wheel hub; mid-drive motors sit around the crank and apply assistance through the bicycle drivetrain. Neither is universally better: route, bike design and intended use determine the best fit.

Choosing for real journeys

Cadence sensors detect pedal rotation, while torque sensors respond to how hard the rider pushes. Torque-based assistance can feel more closely connected to rider input, while cadence systems provide a different, often straightforward riding experience.

Practical considerations

Watts, torque and battery capacity describe different things. Watts relate to electrical power, torque is measured in newton-metres, and battery capacity is commonly expressed in watt-hours (Wh).

Wh measures stored battery energy. A higher Wh figure can support more riding between charges, but actual range still depends on terrain, rider weight, wind, temperature, tyres and assistance settings.

Technology and safety

Controllers regulate power between battery, sensors and motor. Displays provide information such as speed, battery state, assistance level and distance. Good technology should remain useful without distracting the rider.

How to compare

Brakes, tyres, wheels, drivetrain and frame geometry remain critical. Electric assistance does not remove the need for a well-designed, properly maintained bicycle.
