Euthanasia and the Giver

When Jonas views the release of an infant on The Giver's video screen, he realizes for the first time that "release" means death, or, in this case, infanticide. Release for elderly people or for people who have broken the rules three times also means death, or euthanasia. Infanticide is the killing of a newborn child. In the past, the main reason for infanticide was due to food shortages among primitive cultures. In most countries today, infanticide is considered a form of murder.

Society of the future: A culture of Sameness! The young adult novel by Lois Lowry shows a futuristic society where life seems idyllic. There is no more war, pain, poverty, hatred or fear. Men and women are equal. There is no competition because everyone is granted a chance. Rigid rules govern every aspect of life, from language to social behavior and population.

Is Euthanasia a right or a privilege? This means that euthanasia would be a privilege but is illegal. Extreme pain would cause humans to request for their own death, this is when assisted suicide comes to play. Euthanasia can be performed in many different ways for many different reasons. A lethal amount of pills is another way Euthanasia can be performed by action. Active euthanasia minimizes the suffering of a person.
