On Cloud Nine: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Math by Nanci Bell
On Cloud Nine presents a unique program of math instruction that uses manipulatives, mental imagery, and specific language to help students develop the underlying math concepts necessary for reasoning and problem solving with numbers.
On Cloud Nine® is outlined here in its sequential steps: beginning with the most basic concepts of counting, adding, and subtracting, the program progresses to word problems, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. On Cloud Nine® instruction can be used for first-time learners or as an effective intervention program for students who have long struggled with math skills. This manual provides sample lessons, instructional theory, and useful techniques for implementing On Cloud Nine in one-on-one or group settings. On Cloud Nine is one of the program manuals used in the professional development training and instructional services provided by Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes.
On Cloud Nine
We have changed the lives of thousands of children and adults all over the world and I hope we can do the same for you or your loved ones. Mathematics is cognitive processing, thinking, that requires the dual coding of imagery and language. Imagery is fundamental to the process of thinking with numbers. Nicole has difficulty remembering math facts and she struggles with computation. She is overwhelmed by word problems and understanding new math concepts. A primary cause of math difficulties is an inability to create a gestalt image for the concepts underlying math processes.
What's with the ads? I know LMB is well known for their language programs such as Lips and Seeing Stars, but I do not have a lot of information about the effectiveness of their math program. Is it as effective as the language programs? How long does it take to go through the Program number sense, four operations, etc. LMB asks for a commitment of 4 hours a day, which seems quite a lot for a child, and I wonder how well elementary children do with this intensive remmediation.
I thought some of you might be interested in this. I am in my 50s so I wouldnt' think that remediating my math skills would be too easy. Anyway, I have been working on On Cloud Nine, but for my students. Anyway, I got to the part where they teach addition and subtraction of 2 digit to one digit nos. This is done by visualizing the no. Maybe sounds easy to you, I was never able to do this in my head before.

Why do some children learn math readily, handle money and time concepts with ease, retain information from year to year, and think with numbers effortlessly? What cognitive processes do some have that others do not? Mathematics is cognitive process-thinking-that requires the dual coding of imagery and language. Imagery is fundamental to the process of thinking with numbers. Albert Einstein, whose theories of relativity helped explain our universe, used imagery as the base for his mental processing and problem solving. Perhaps he summarized the importance of imagery best when he said, "If I can't picture it, I can't understand it.
