Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird

Angelina loves to dance;so much so, that she forgets to clean and to get ready for school--so much so, that she even ruins her neighbors pansies in the process! So, her parents decide to buy her a brand new, pink ballet dress and slippers. This is the Oh, Angelina syndrome--she means well, ya know, she doesnt know any better. After she gets her brand new gear, Angelina attends dance class and is more responsible at home. She eventually becomes a famous ballerina.

How is any of this logical?

I understand that Angelina has a dream and nothing will stop her, even her parents, even the rules. I just dont see how this is a nice lesson or story for children. Its almost saying dont pay any attention to the people around you, behave selfishly, and you will eventually push them to give you what they want. This story would have been better if her parents had taught her to have respect for her family and for the property of others and if she had learned all of these things, perhaps they would be able to help her begin to dance.

As a side note, I also hate the campy glitter on the cover of the new edition. This book is clearly geared for young girls (4-8).

But while it's all fun and games for children - who get to ditch their uniforms and go to school in fancy dress - the experience can be slightly less fun for the parents who have to actually create the costumes. But don't panic, we've rounded up 51 World Book Day costume ideas - from elaborate constructions to last-minute quick fixes. Jamie Oliver's wife Jools dressed one of their little girls up as Matilda from the book by Roald Dahl. She's dressed in a school uniform with a pile of books under her arm and a big ole grin on her face. Fearne Cotton is known for making sure her children's faces are never shown online, and if she does upload one, their faces are always obscured. She's shared a rare snap of her son Rex, with the caption: "World book day is like ever other day for Rex. He wears his squid hat.

We all love World Book Day. Lola at the time of typing! However, observant as she is, she has informed me she needs a few strands of black hair. Wool, a witches hat and my trusty old glue-gun to the rescue! I may also make her a felt owl too. Just print off a large version of the owl and use it as a template.

Roald Dahl characters are always a good choice. For Veruca Salt all you need is an adorable pink or red dress, preferably with a white collar, white tights, a brightly coloured lollypop and of course a golden ticket. An old patterned jumper, a chocolate bar and a golden ticket will do the trick. Harry Potter or any Hogwarts student is a classic that always works. A white rabbit cuddly toy or some playing cards are the perfect addition to this costume!
