Betty & Veronica: Girls Rule! by Archie ComicsI grew up with Archie Andrews and friends. Thanks to garage sales and grocery store checkout lines, I read many of the adventures of the students at Riverdale High. You can imagine my disappointment when a recent television series took a universe of characters I was raised with and butchered it.
Despite the franchises recent turn for the worse, Im still a fan of the old-school comics. So, youd probably expect that Id enjoy this...and, for the most part, I did. Theyre the usual cute and humorous stories I grew up reading, and theres even a Sabrina story for good measure.
However, the one issue I had was with The Battle of the Jitterbugs. Ive read older comics before, but the character designs in that chapter were hideous; Ive never seen Betty and Veronica look that ugly. Other than that, I enjoyed this collection.
When it comes to Riverdale and the Archie comics , for that matter , there's a given fact that's always been and always will be: Archie is forever caught in a love triangle between Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. This who-will-he-choose model has persisted through the decades and decades of comic book issues, and has already emerged as a romantic sticking point in the TV series. Betty makes it clear that she's in love with Archie from the get-go, and his chemistry with Veronica is undeniable. With all the tension brewing, it's hard not to look to the source material to figure out where this might go. And, well, we have some bad news.
In issues —, the story features a futuristic look into the life of Riverdale teen Archie Andrews in the years that follow his college graduation when Archie makes his ultimate decision to marry Veronica Lodge instead of Betty Cooper. In Issues —, the story switches and Archie proposes marriage to Betty instead of to Veronica. Issue serves as the epilogue to the story and ties the previous six issues together. In May , Archie Comics released plans for what they would call "The Archie Story Of The Century" and announced that Archie Andrews would ask Veronica Lodge to marry him in Archie Comics , the first issue of a six-part story arc detailing their engagement, marriage and life together. The publishers of Archie Comics did not expect the response they would get from readers and longtime fans telling them they made a mistake in Archie's choice. The New York Times would later reveal that the whole story is simply a fantasy and that the first half of the story would show Archie's life with Veronica, and the second half would show his life with Betty. The night before the gang's graduation from Riverdale High, The Archies play their final concert and mourn the oncoming changes.
And while the gang's all back, intertwined in their own relationships, there are some pretty stark differences between the show and the comic books. And while some may be scratching their head at the difference in characters or storylines, that doesn't mean this show isn't entertaining, to say the least. So when Camila Mendes signed on, people were taken back by how much she looked like Veronica from the comics! Minus the bangs, Camila's dark hair, eyes, and gorgeous eyebrows won everyone over. However, Camila Mendes is actually Latina descent, something that comic book Veronica was not. And as Miss Mendes states, "It's rare that you see Latin families being portrayed as intelligent, sophisticated, and powerful entities," which is something she's proud to bring to the table. With an obsession with food mmm burgers and a knack for being lazy, Jughead was the silly best friend who wasn't interested in dating.
This week, we found out why. The crucial element in most of the old-school Archie comics was that Archie never had to definitively choose. When we met the new versions of Archie and Betty , their best moments with each other were in the past.

Elizabeth "Betty" Cooper is portrayed as a nice, beautiful, smart, sweet, tomboyish and funny girl with blonde hair. Her eyes are typically described as blue, but are only drawn as such in later years and during close-up shots of her face; at all other times, her eyes are simply drawn with black ink. The quintessential year-old girl next door, Betty's middle class upbringing is a world apart from the flashy lifestyle of her wealthy friend and rival, Veronica Lodge. Nowhere is this more evident than when she and Veronica are competing for Archie Andrews ' heart, and yet they remain best friends Veronica once told Archie that she and Betty are only rivals in unimportant matters In the late s, the two girls joined Archie's band, a garage band appropriately named The Archies.
