Similarities Between Hinduism & Islam by DR. Zakir Naik
Hinduism and Islam, A Comparison of Beliefs and Practices
There are many differences, and a few similarities that can be found when comparing Islam and Hinduism. The preceding paragraphs will concentrate on comparing these specific areas: Background, Idea of God, Creation, Salvation, and Destiny. Firstly, we must recognize the backgrounds of the two religions. Islam, the youngest of the major world religions, is only fourteen centuries old. It originates from the story of Muhammad, a prince who, after much meditation, arrives at many a revelation. These revelations can be found in the Quran, which Muslims believe to be the will and essential truths of God imparted to Muhammad. Muslims base their lives upon these truths.
So then what is the source or basis of hinduism? I thought the great philosophical description of oneness of God is found only in the Vedas, but surprisingly you don't attribute this to vedas. What's their origin and how does it fit into over all philosophy of One God? Secondly, what do you mean by realization of One God and not followed? But then you talked about reaching God and not heaven, does it mean that one becomes God or what?
Hinduism is a way of life of the Hindu people of India , their diaspora, and some other regions which had Hindu influence in the ancient and medieval times. Islam shares common terms with the Abrahamic religions —those religions claiming descent from Abraham —being, from oldest to youngest, Judaism , Christianity , Islam, and Baha'i Faith. The Qur'an and the Hadiths are the primary Islamic scriptures. The scriptures of Hinduism are the Shrutis the four Vedas , which comprise the original Vedic Hymns, or Samhitas, and three tiers of commentaries upon the Samhitas, namely the Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads ; these are considered authentic, authoritative divine revelation. Hinduism and Islam share some ritual practices such as fasting and pilgrimage , but differ in their views on apostasy , blasphemy , circumcision, consanguineous marriages, idol making, henotheism , social stratification, vegetarianism , and Ahimsa as a virtue. Their historical interaction since the 7th century has witnessed periods of cooperation and syncretism, as well as periods of religious violence.
At a time when Hindus and Muslims have again started killing each other, when mistrust, misunderstanding and hate stalk the two communities, it is imperative that Islam and Hinduism learn at last to live together.

Islam originated in the desert sands of Arabia as a reaction against prevailing native traditions based on the revelations received by Prophet Muhammad. Hinduism originated in the temperate climate of the Indian subcontinent as a result of the synthesis of different indigenous and foreign traditions and in continuation of the prehistoric religious beliefs of lost civilizations.
