Symposium/The Death of Socrates by Plato

With an Introduction by Jane OGrady. Translated by Tom Griffith.

In Symposium, a group of Athenian aristocrats attend a party and talk about love, until the drunken Alcibiades bursts in and decides to discuss Socrates instead. Symposium gives an unsurpassed picture of the sparkling society that was Athens at the height of her empire.

The setting of the other dialogues is more sombre. Socrates is put on trial for impiety, and sentenced to death. Euthyphro discusses the nature of piety, Apology is Socrates speech in his own defence, Crito explains his refusal to escape punishment, and Phaedo gives an account of Socrates last day.

These dialogues have never been offered in one volume before. Tom Griffiths Symposium has been described as possibly the finest translation of any Platonic dialogue. All the other translations are new.

Episodes on Plato investigate the literary and philosophical features of such famous dialogues as the Meno, Phaedo, Republic, Parmenides, and Timaeus, as well as lesser known works like the Euthydemus, the Charmides and the Cratylus. Fine ed. In the first of several episodes on Socrates, Peter discusses his portrayals in "The Clouds" of Aristophanes and in the works of the historian Xenophon. Peter's colleague Raphael Woolf joins him to discuss Socrates as he is portrayed by Plato: the gadfly of Athens. But was he an ascetic? And could it really be true that virtue is knowledge?

The Apology of Socrates by Plato

He is widely considered the pivotal figure in the history of Ancient Greek and Western philosophy , along with his teacher, Socrates , and his most famous student, Aristotle. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy. Plato is also considered the founder of Western political philosophy. His most famous contribution is the theory of Forms known by pure reason , in which Plato presents a solution to the problem of universals known as Platonism also ambiguously called either Platonic realism or Platonic idealism. He is also the namesake of Platonic love and the Platonic solids. His own most decisive philosophical influences are usually thought to have been along with Socrates, the pre-Socratics Pythagoras , Heraclitus and Parmenides , although few of his predecessors' works remain extant and much of what we know about these figures today derives from Plato himself.

The Relationship Between Socrates and Plato. Most of what we think we know about Socrates comes from a student of his over forty years his junior, Plato. Socrates himself wrote--so far as we know--nothing. Plato to B. E is especially important to our understanding of the trial of Socrates because he, along with Xenophon, wrote the only two surviving accounts of the defense or apology of Socrates.
