There are excellent translations by Constance Garnett, Rosemary Edmonds and, my favourite, by Louise and Aylmer Maude, whose version was approved by Tolstoy. And now there is a new translation, by Anthony Briggs, which is accurate and clear; and, in general, faithful.

I have tried chapter comparisons and actually read the book, and found Anthony Briggs one is the excellent version when it comes to the beauty of the language. Penguin used Rosemary Edmonds translation for almost 50 years and switched to Anthony Briggs one. Aylmer and Louise one is easy to read.

War and Peace Book Review

May 21, by Kat. Here is the traditional Frisbee summer picture of a book in a bicycle helmet. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peac e tipped the helmet. This is especially a problem with poetry. And War and Peace is such an engrossing novel that it reads easily in any translation. I am very fond of Garnett, who translated 70 Russian works in the late 19th century and early 20th, among them Tolstoy, Turgenev, Gogol, and Chekhov. She would finish a page, and throw it off on a pile on the floor without looking up, and start a new page.

Tolstoy is a magnificent writer. He is never dull, never stupid, never tired, never pedantic, never theatrical! What did Joyce mean by not being theatrical? Prince Andrey ran to the door. The screaming stopped and he heard a different sound, the wail of a baby. Tolstoy's War and Peace, whose unparaphrasable plot covers Russia during the Napoleonic wars, is a 1,page exercise in - a treadmill of - irony; and it is gleefully experimental. With War and Peace, Tolstoy introduced two novelistic innovations, both based on his new principle of length, which was part of his constant principle of irony.
