About Leonardo

Richard Gunderman does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment. Widely considered one of the greatest polymaths in human history, Leonardo was an inventor, artist, musician, architect, engineer, anatomist, botanist, geologist, historian and cartographer. Twenty-first-century scholars at MIT ranked him the sixth most influential person who ever lived. Like Rembrandt and Michelangelo, he is so renowned that he is known by only his first name. Yet despite his fame, there are things about Leonardo that many people today find surprising. Leonardo was born out of wedlock on April 15, His father, Piero, was a wealthy notary, and his mother, Caterina, was a local peasant girl.

It is well-documented that Leonardo, who lived between and , often wrote in mirror writing, either in an attempt to stop his rivals stealing his ideas or in a bid to hide his scientific theories, often deemed as subversive, from the powerful Roman Catholic Church.

About six months ago I stopped eating meat. I was teaching a graduate course at UCLA that investigated how Italian Renaissance writers conveyed their concepts about the human through writing about the nonhuman — plants, animals, objects, angels, demons, gods and God. Cutting flowers for a short-lived bouquet seemed wrong; chewing on animal flesh became flat out impossible. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the authors we were studying in the course.

The ceiling is that of the Sistine Chapel , the large papal chapel built within the Vatican between and by Pope Sixtus IV , for whom the chapel is named. It was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. The chapel is the location for papal conclaves and many other important services. The ceiling's various painted elements form part of a larger scheme of decoration within the Chapel, which includes the large fresco The Last Judgment on the sanctuary wall, also by Michelangelo, wall paintings by several leading painters of the late 15th century including Sandro Botticelli , Domenico Ghirlandaio and Pietro Perugino , and a set of large tapestries by Raphael , the whole illustrating much of the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Central to the ceiling decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis of which The Creation of Adam is the best known, having an iconic standing equaled only by Leonardo da Vinci ' s Mona Lisa , the hands of God and Adam being reproduced in countless imitations.

One of those controversies involves the figure seated at the table to the right of Christ. Is that St. John or Mary Magdalene? Although there are multiple reproductions in museums and on mousepads, the original of "The Last Supper" is a fresco. Painted between and , the work is enormous, measuring 15 by 29 feet 4.
