Mix It Up

16 Engaging books about colors

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. I still use it when a little one asks me the colors of the rainbow. Monsters Love Colors by Mike Austin is a fun, silly and energetic book about colors. I love the simplicity yet rich text and illustrations in this one. A perfect pick for toddlers. Train lovers will love Freight Train by Donald Crews. Each car of the train is a different color.

When parents ask me for ways to teach colors to their toddler or preschooler, my first recommendation is to read books about colors. This list is a great place to start! There are a million books about colors out there, but for this post I wanted to focus on the ones that are best for teaching colors. When I began reading these to my little guy 2 years, 8 months , he knew no color names at all. Now, two months later, he knows almost all of them. All it took was reading and talking about a few of these books several times a week. Click here for a printable list.
