The Pillar of Fire by J.H. IngrahamThis book is written as a correspondence between Moses and a Phoenician prince. At the start, the reader sees Moses as an Egyptian prince, observes his dawning realization of his heritage, followed by his escape from Egypt, and return many years later.
The heavy research in this book can make it feel like heavy reading at times. But dont give up! I came away fascinated by what it must have been like to go from powerful monarch to member of a slave nation. There are many intriguing details, such as the idea that Aaron may have been enslaved in making idols, which could explain why he so easily fashioned a golden calf!

According to Hollywood lore, while filming the orgy sequence that precedes Moses' descent from Mount Horeb with the two stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments are engraved, Cecil B. DeMille was perched on top of a ladder delivering his customarily long-winded directions through a megaphone to the hundreds of extras involved in the scene.
The people of Israel cried out to God to be rescued from their misery as slaves in Egypt, and God heard them. He was ready to set them free. But first God had to reveal himself to Moses in a convincing manner that would prove his power and his purposes. God had to get Moses' full attention. He did this by appearing to Moses in a burning bush, yet a bush that was not consumed. The story of Moses and the burning bush appears in the book of Exodus 3 and 4. While tending his father-in-law Jethro's sheep in the land of Midian, Moses saw a baffling sight on Mount Horeb.

The story of Moses was depicted succinctly for the most part, but the acting sometimes distracted me. The effects of certain parts were incredible; my favorite being the parting of the Red Sea. I also loved that the film was shot on location in Egypt. It made the film that much more realistic and appealing and took away from the poor acting a bit for me. The Ten Commandments tells the story of Moses, leader of the Hebrews, considered to have been a prophet by Jews, Christians and Muslims. He is thought to have lived in Egypt, in or around the 14th century BC. DeMille himself strolls on screen at the beginning of the film, to explain how he has filled the gaps in the Biblical story of Moses's life with the work of historians such as Josephus and Philo. He claims they had access to ancient documents which have since been destroyed. In reality, there's no evidence that there were ever any such documents, and both Josephus and Philo were writing over a millennium after Moses's death. Other historians of that era, including Tacitus, treated Moses as a legendary figure. One of the reasons that putting a date to Moses's life is so difficult is that the Book of Exodus isn't specific about which pharaohs it describes.
